Self is the only prison that can ever bind the soul. ~Henry Van Dyke
.
Today I am grateful...
- for the freedoms in sobriety, that I can be spontaneous and carefree occasionally
- that God throws us together with others in recovery that offer such great life lessons
- for art events in endless amounts. There is so much out there.
- to be blessed with another sober Saturday. No longer do I wait until 11 a.m. for the liquor store to open so I can make the awfulness go away.
- for those who have led the way and assured me all would be okay if I did the work
Calvin: Do you believe in the devil? You know, a supreme evil being dedicated to the temptation, corruption, and destruction of man?
Hobbes: I'm not sure that man needs the help.

I'm so grateful to have escaped the "awfulness" too.
Lou posted a link to a very handsome picture of you Scott. I love having a visual picture of the person behind these words. Always such pertinent and wise words...Happy sober Saturday!
I'm glad that you aren't awful anymore too.
Each morning I pray for the "relief from the bondage of self" - on a really good day, I spend a part of the day outside of that bondage...
I'm glad you have freedom too...
Blessings and aloha...
You always sound like my sober husband, only a lot more eloquent. Will you visit my blog someday? I wrote a poem about him called "Cactus Love" and you might like that business about sober relationships. Gratitude is sometimes the only way to stay sane.
I too am extremely grateful to have met others in recovery. I hope you don't mind I referenced your blog in my own. It's such a great idea to come up with 5 things you're grateful for every day.
i love the calvin and hobbes quote and the cartoon in general :)
I wonder if Henry van Dyke was related to Morey Amsterdam.
Dave, that was funny!
I so agree with Hobbes, I'm going to see Lou and track down your picture.
I don't think that was Hobbes as in Calvin and...
calvin and hobbes are so funny!
