Lesbians & Gays Remember the Holocaust

Thursday 27th January 2005 marks Holocaust Memorial Day.

Holocaust Memorial Day promotes awareness and raises understanding of the Holocaust and its victims. The Memorial seeks to remind us of the grave atrocities of the Holocaust, hoping to inspire us to ensure that racism, sexism, and extreme cruelty have no place in society.

The Holocaust Memorial serves as an important reminder to members of the LGBT community -- as the infamous gay pink triangle has its roots in the Holocaust. It's widely believed, and documented, that Hitler came for the homosexuals first. Gay males were made to wear pink triangles, while lesbians wore the black triangles. This branding was meant to single out homosexuals to prison guards and other Holocaust victims. It was estimated that 2,000,000 gay men lived in Germany during Hitler's rule. It was Hitler's goal to find all gay men and remove them from society.

This is a time to remember all Holocaust victims, gay and straight:

"We must be on the watch for any revival of anti-Semitism, and ready to act against the new forms of it that are appearing today," Annan said. "That obligation binds us not only to the Jewish people, but to all others that have been, or may be, threatened with a similar fate."

Today I am grateful...

  • for Lambda Center, a recovery center for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender alcoholics
  • that we love all alcoholics and welcome them into our rooms
  • that at Lambda Center you will find more love and acceptance than you could ever imagine
  • that no matter how much 'moral values' are misconstrued, we can live relatively free in a country increasingly prone to hatred of us because we were born homosexual
  • that love eventually conquers all
