IF THE ONLY PRAYER YOU SAID IN YOUR LIFE WAS "THANK YOU", THAT WOULD SUFFICE. ~Meister Eckhart

A smile directed at a stranger, a compliment given to a friend, an attitude of laughter, or a thoughtful gesture can send ripples that spread among your loved ones and associates, out into your community, and finally throughout the world. You have the power to touch the lives of everyone you come into contact with and everyone those people come into contact with. The momentum of your influence will grow as your ripples moves onward and outward. One of those ripples could become a tidal wave of love and kindness. ~Daily Om

Today I am grateful...
  • to start another week, sober and rested
  • that I found a quote using 'maudlin'--see below
  • that a friend directed me back to center yesterday by letting me know that 'thank you' is a sufficient answer to a compliment. I have a tendency to counter with a self-effacing comment.
  • for principle over expediency
  • that today I sill strive to take the advice 'I meditate on the "comfortableness" of freedom.'

Self-pity is one of the most unhappy and consuming defects that we know. It is a bar to all spiritual progress and can cut off all effective communication with our fellows because of its inordinate demands for attention and sympathy. It is a maudlin form of martyrdom, which we can ill afford. ~As Bill Sees It

The word maudlin sounds like cough syrup to me.
Like you, I wish "thank you" came to my lips first, before some kind of excuse why I don't deserve the good thing you are saying to me.

I can't receive a compliment either, without making excuses. Next time, I'll say "thank you."

Thank you Scott.

I needed that quote on self-pity cause I am INDULGING it right now.

I should focus more on changing the lives around me.

Happy Monday!

Scott I love that first sentence, "A smile directed at a stranger, a compliment given to a friend, an attitude of laughter, or a thoughtful gesture can send ripples that spread among your loved ones and associates, out into your community, and finally throughout the world." Yesterday as I traveled through the rural countryside on my way back from visiting family, I noticed several strangers all the way throwing up a hand and waving. They didn't know me but it made me smile and made me happy that a stranger took the time to wave, smile and greet me. I think I'll try to do more of that myself. I hope you have a great Monday and week ahead.

Good reminder to just say Thanks when someone says something nice. I don't need to say more. And the quote about self-pity is great.

Thank you...

I hate that it really is "...a maudlin form of martyrdom..." - it feels so righteous and productive when I'm in the middle of it...

Blessings and aloha

Joe has trouble with saying thank you. In fact he has trouble saying a lot of things. Except when he has the blobs. Then he can't say anything to me because I am laughing too hard over the word blob. You know what I mean. hehe

Have a great day, Buddy!

I agree with Pam. Maudlin sounds like a drug from the 1800's.
When Elizabeth tried to stop taking laudanum, she became hooked on maudlin instead.

I like the Daily Om.

Self-Pity. Thank God, that's been gone for a long time, but who knows? Old friends and enemies show up at the oddest hours of day or night.
