Blog Action Day: Poverty

Today Bloggers around the world are focusing on Poverty.
hunger-sm
A gnawing feeling in the stomach. Light-headedness. Dizziness. Headaches. Lethargy or weakness. Inability to concentrate. A craving for food. Pain. All of these are associated with hunger.
.
Most of us can end the temporary experience of hunger. But more than 900,000 individuals in southeast Texas may not have that choice. They don’t know where their next meal is coming from. They’re called “food insecure.” And every day, an estimated 35,000 people are truly defined as “hungry,” men and women of all ages, and children - wrestling with these unwanted symptoms.
.
The Houston Food Bank, powered by our donors and working in partnership with nearly 400 hunger relief agencies in 18 southeast Texas counties, feeds more than 80,000 individuals each week who are hungry or food insecure.
Arm yourself with knowledge; Hunger Facts.
.
The Houston Feed the Most Vulnerable Project provides tools and information to help people make the most of federal food and nutrition programs for homeless shelters and individuals.
.
.
.
This will be my post for today. Thank you for considering donating to a local food bank today to honor those who are hungry. Hunger is just one effect of poverty. If you are grateful to have a full belly today, please consider donating to the Houston Food Bank or a food bank in your area.
Blog Action Day is just one day of the year. Hunger is constant in the world.

It's amazing to think this is going on in our backyard. It deeply saddens me. I will donate today.

Last night I started thinking about ways to get AS involved in volunteering. Many years ago I spent hours in a food bank helping out. Maybe he and I could do this together. something to think about thanks for posting this.

Thanks, Scott. When my kid was homeless I became very aware of the number of people hungry. And in my city, hungry and..cold.
I do what I can here.

Thank you, Scott, for posting this. The food banks across the nation are having a hard time keeping up with the increasing number of clients, and we do need to get the word out. In some cases, numbers have doubled or better.
In a country like ours it is an outrage that there are children going to bed hungry. That any of our citizens are living on substandard nutrition, yet it is a reality.

Thanks for all you do. And if everyone who reads this blog takes even the smallest action, it would have far reaching results.

I agree with akannie. It is crazy that our citizens are starving. We are so quick to help other countries and so often forget about our own. I will check into the food bank here and see what they need most. More than likely some of everything.

Dear Scott,

thank you for your Blog on hunger awareness and Poverty.

the two go hand in hand. Also, I have seen articles about the way in which our and other countries' soil is playing out for crops.

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

We, in America, are ruining our soils and plants with genetic engineering. Poverty, the issue of the "haves" and "have nots" increases every day under our noses.

Sometimes I wish we could start all over.

My motorcycle in LA donated to the AIDS food bank. Each year at our Christmas Party instead of a gift exchange we each bought non-perishables and We asked our guests to do the same. The reponse was overwhelming - we had three pickup truck loads to deliver, after the 2nd year we made this a continual program. It was awesome.
Thanks for doing this Scott.

There is so much we can do with so little. Let's do it!

it's so easy for most of us to take what we have for granted until we're reminded of how many people have so little to eat today.
.so little to keep them warm and secure..yep..poverty needs more attention in this world so more of us can find a creative way to help.
